Solution-Focused Therapy in Greenacres, and Online Across Florida
Techniques to Build Clarity, Forward Momentum, and Follow-Through
What is Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT)?
Solution-focused therapy asserts that you are the world's foremost expert on you.
Solution-focused therapy is grounded in optimism, agency, and clarity of purpose. It shifts attention from problems to solutions and looks at what you want for your future.
You’ve probably heard this adage: Give a person a fish and they’ll eat for a day. Teach a person to fish and they’ll eat for a lifetime. In keeping with that idea, one of our goals for you in therapy is to make sure you leave therapy with mental health coping skills that will last you a lifetime.
Solution-focused therapy assumes that you have the strength and skills to be your best self. I will help you identify those strengths. I’ll also show you how to reframe skills that used to hurt you into skills that can help you going forward.
For example, did you know that procrastination can be an asset? Or that overthinking can serve you in a positive way? We’re going to turn problems into solutions.
How Does Solution-Focused Therapy Work?
Solution-focused sessions are focused and practical. That said, it’s much more my style to use SFT as an in-the-moment method. Therapy is most effective when the intervention is tailored for what you’re dealing with on a particular day or at a particular time in your life. What works for you one day might not work for you another day. Because I’ve had specialized training in using SFT, I know exacty when this approach will hit home for you udring a session.
Many clients come to therapy with their own ideas of what should and shouldn’t work. I’m open to hearing what’s worked for you in the past and what you’d like to try now, but I don’t expect you to have the "perfect plan", and you’re not going to leave therapy with a “perfect plan.”
(Spoiler alert: There is no perfect plan!)
Instead, we start small by asking solution-focused questions such as:
What differences would you like to see in your life as a result of us talking in session?
We also ask big questions, like:
What would you like to experience instead of the experiences you’re currently having?
If you woke up tomorrow and your best hopes had become a reality, what would you notice first?
Solution-focused work isn't just about me suggesting solutions for you; it's about me asking the questions that increase your awareness of your ability to figure things out yourself. This is a growth-oriented approach.
One of the most common questions I’m asked about using SFT is,
“If we only focus on solutions, does that mean we ignore my current pain, past trauma, or how serious the problem is?”
We don't ignore problems; we reposition them. We absolutely acknowledge and respect your pain or past experiences, but the primary focus shifts to creating forward momentum. We treat the past as important context, but we use that context to figure out what you want to build now, rather than spending session after session analyzing what went wrong.
The Benefits of Solution-Focused Therapy: How Does It Help in Real Life?
This kind of work helps you:
move from thinking about change to actually making it.
break goals down into something you can realistically follow through on.
build consistency instead of starting over repeatedly.
notice small wins and use them to create momentum.
Progress doesn’t come from one big shift.
It comes from small, repeated actions that start to add up.
We tend to get stuck because we’re trying to solve everything at once. It’s overwhelming. Solution-focused work narrows it down to what we can do now - which problems we can solve today.
Instead of,
“How do I fix my entire life?”
we ask:
“What’s one shift that would make this situation better?”
And then:
“What’s one first manageable step toward that?”
That’s how momentum builds.
Who does Solution-Focused Therapy Work Best For?
This approach tends to work well if you:
feel stuck despite knowing what you want.
have a hard time following through consistently.
want practical, forward-moving sessions.
prefer active discussion over analysis.
are ready to start doing something different, even if it’s small.
How Solution-Focused Therapy Fits into My Overall Approach
Solution-focused work is a strength-based approach. It pairs well with:
CBT (for understanding patterns)
DBT (for managing emotions while you take action)
Positive Psychology (for culivating positive emotions)
Mindfulness-based practices (for seeing quick results)
Twelve-Step Faciliation (for living in the solution instead of the problem)
Together, these approaches help you:
understand what’s happening in your mind and in your life.
stay steady while it’s happening.
and actually move forward.
Why I Specialize in Solution-Focused Therapy
I use Solution-Focused Therapy in my practice because:
The research shows it’s a reliable way to quickly get to the heart of what you want both in therapy and in life.
I’ve had years of experience using SFT to help clients break the cycle of addiction, reduce their anxiety, and embrace their personal growth.
My experience with hundreds of clients has shown this approach to be highly effective in cutting through mental noise and moving through hard questions.
I specialize in SFT because my clients want answers. It’s been my clinical experience that focusing on solutions is the best way to get those answers.
It may help you to know that most people start therapy feeling stuck and overwhelmed. It’s my job to know the right questions to ask to get you unstuck. What’s really cool is that when I model that skill of asking the right questions, you learn that skill from me and carry it with you into the rest of your life.
That’s one of the most enjoyable aspects of my job, because I get to see those lightbulb moments you have, and we get to celebrate them together.
Take the first step.
If you’re tired of thinking about change and ready to start creating it, this approach gives you a way to build momentum without overwhelming yourself.
